It was an era of ingenuity born out of necessity. Not long after World War II, Royal G. Thern, like his fellow G.I.s, returned to his roots. Having spent his pre-war lifetime around large machines and heavy equipment, Roy and his wife Lucille came to America’s heartland, settling upon the shores of the mighty Mississippi river in the small, but well to do town of Winona, Minnesota.

Working together, the mechanized-minded duo of Roy and Lucille created a corn sheller, lever operated chain hoist, cordwood saw frame and a differential chain hoist. These early creations would in turn lead to something much greater, the founding of Thern Incorporated. Sixty plus years later, you’ll find that Roy and Lucille’s knack for mechanical innovation stillprevails. From our Winona headquarters, Thern has established a rock steady tradition for designing and manufacturing the most dependable, powerful and durable tools for lifting, pulling and positioning objects.
